Event “Birds of San Martin – A virtual journey through its main observation sites”
This event showed the local biodiversity, mainly birds, helping to position their main observation sites and contributing to empower the managers of each of these sites, within the process of reactivating nature tourism in the San Martin region and the Northern Peruvian Birding Route.
Despite the various difficulties faced during the pandemic, which in Peru and specifically the region, continues to grow, a group of organizations (Ikam Expeditions, Bosque de Proteccion Alto Mayo – BPAM, Consejo Noramazonico de Aviturismo y Ecoturismo – CONAVE and Camara Nacional de Turismo – CANATUR) decided to come together to organize this important event. By then, the several high-level proposals already presented abroad (mainly Colombia and Costa Rica) until the day of the event, had set the bar high, with live presentations and/or high-quality audiovisual material.
The idea was to present an appropriate proposal to the reality of the region but at the same time attractive, entertaining, with high-quality images, that prioritizes birds, their observation sites and the managers who make these sites possible. As a result, on the celebration week of Peru’s Independence Day, the anniversary of the city of Moyobamba and the Alto Mayo Protect Forest, the birding community of San Martin presented 3 virtual tours:
July 25th: Birds of Moyobamba and its surroundings
July 27th: Birds of Cordillera Escalera and its surroundings
July 29th: Birds of BPAM and its surroundings
In addition, 12 birding sites were presented, their main 48 bird species, of which 4 are endemic; and 13 people who are dedicated to the management of each of these sites also participated as speakers.
Additionally, 2 sites of great importance for the Northern Peru Birding Route were presented, which are an extension of the proposed virtual tours, and also 3 endemic species from these sites, which are icons of the Peruvian birds.
As part of the organizing team of the event we are very satisfied with the results and thank all the entities that contributed to its success, which paid tribute to the efforts of various organizations working for the conservation and sustainable development of the San Martin region and, therefore, of the natural heritage of Peru.
