The Alto Mayo Valley is composed of the provinces of Moyobamba and Rioja, in the region of San Martin, being one of the most impressive jungle landscapes of Peru that has a great diversity of ecosystems and wildlife.
This expedition is ideal for nature lovers and amateur photographers. Discovering nature through the experience provided by local community associations dedicated to nature conservation is unforgettable.
DAY 01: Nocturnal Fauna of the Alto Mayo Wetlands - Tingana
The natural expedition begins with arrive at the airport and then we move to the Alto Mayo wetlands, the highest in the Peruvian jungle.
On this day we visit an agro-ecological farm and experience vanilla cultivation; Then we make a nocturnal wildlife observation expedition where we can observe the Common Potoo (Nyctibius griseus), the Common Pauraque (Nyctidromus albicollis), owls such as the Tropical Screech-Owl (Megascops choliba), Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl (Glaucidium brasilianum), Spectacled Owl (Pulsatrix perspicillata), mammals such as the Common Black-eared Opossum (Didelphis marsupialis), mice and some amphibians and reptiles.
We spend the night in a local lodge with basic facilities.
DAY 02: Wildlife of the Alto Mayo Wetlands - Tingana
The next day, the expeditions start very early, where we navigate through the renacales wetlands and observe the flora and fauna of the area. We have a delicious regional breakfast in the middle of the forest.
The species of monkeys that we can observe are the Common squirrel monkey (Saimiri macrodon), Large-headed capuchin (Sapajus macrocephalus), Red howler monkey (Alouatta seniculus); while in birds we can observe the Black-fronted Nunbird (Monasa nigrifrons), Thrush-like Wren (Campylorhynchus turdinus), Chestnut-eared Araçari (Pteroglossus castanotis), Ringed Kingfisher (Megaceryle torquata), Green-backed Trogon (Trogon viridis), among many other species.
During the tour we may also come across a Two-toed Sloth (Choloepus hoffmanni) and South American Coati (Nasua nasua). Finally, at 4:00 pm we return to Moyobamba city, where we will spend the night in local lodging.
DAY 03: Birding in Moyobamba and Morro de Calzada
On the third day we start our activities very early in natural areas very close to the Moyobamba city to observe local wildlife including the endemic San Martin Titi Monkey (Plecturocebus enanthe) and the saddle-back tamarin (Leontocebus leucogenys), hummingbirds such as the Rufous-crested Coquette (Lophornis delattrei), Black-throated Hermit (Phaethornis atrimentalis), Sapphire-spangled Emerald (Chionomesa lactea), Blue-tailed Emerald (Chlorostilbon mellisugus) and other birds of great interest such as the Fiery-capped Manakin (Machaeropterus pyrocephalus), Plumbeous Kite (Ictinia plumbea), Blue-crowned Trogon (Trogon curucui), Paradise Tanager (Tangara chilensis) and the endemic Black-bellied Tanager (Ramphocelus melanogaster).
After lunch, return to the airport where the service ends.
