BIRDING IN PERU
Peru is recognized as one of the most biodiverse countries on the planet. In terms of birds, it has 1,919 registered species, of which 118 are endemic (Plenge and Ángulo, 2025), confirming that the country is a bird paradise.
Among the most notable and interesting species are Marvelous Spatuletail (Loddigesia mirabilis), Long-whiskered Owlet (Xenoglaux loweryi), Scarlet-banded Barbet (Capito wallacei), Junín Grebe (Podiceps taczanowski), Golden-backed Mountain Tanager (Buthraupis aureodorsalis), Pale-billed Antpitta (Grallaria carrikeri), Humboldt Penguin (Spheniscus humboldti), Inca Tern (Larosterna inca), Andean Condor (Vultur gryphus), Andean Cock-of-the-rock (Rupicola peruvianus), White-bellied Cinclodes (Cinclodes palliatus), among others (Puhakka, Salo, and Sääksjärvi, 2011).
From north to south and from the coast to the mountains and jungle, Peru offers great opportunities for birdwatching. Here, each ecosystem is a living stage, and each species is a protagonist in its natural habitat.
