Since 2024 we have been implementing a tanager observatory in the town of Calzada as part of our Morro de Calzada Amazon Center birding and wildlife tourism experience, having recorded 16 species.
Species recorded at the tanager observatory
As of the date of publication of this article, 16 species have been recorded. The species recorded are the following: Burnished-buff Tanager (Stilpnia cayana), Turquoise Tanager (Tangara mexicana), Black-bellied Tanager (Ramphocelus melanogaster), Blue-gray Tanager (Thraupis episcopus), Palm Tanager (Thraupis palmarum), White-lined Tanager (Tachyphonus rufus), Blue-necked Tanager (Stilpnia cyanicollis), Orange-backed Troupial (Icterus croconotus), Purple-throated Euphonia (Euphonia chlorotica), Thick-billed Euphonia (Euphonia laniirostris), Golden-bellied Euphonia (Euphonia chrysopasta), White-vented Euphonia (Euphonia minuta), Bananaquit (Coereba flaveola), Rufous-collared Sparrow (Zonotrichia capensis), Yellow-rumped Cacique (Cacicus cela) and Black-billed Thrush (Turdus ignobilis).
Tourist visit proposal
This observatory is part of a full day birdwatching itinerary at Morro de Calzada Amazon Center that includes: (1) Tanager observatory, (2) Monkey observatory (San Martin Titi Monkey and Illiger’s saddle-back tamarin Monkey), (3) Hummingbird garden, (4) Crakes observatory and (5) observation of nocturnal wildlife species.

The infrastructure of the tanager observatory allows you to enjoy bird watching and photography, even in the presence of rain, and you can request food service (breakfast and lunch) in advance, while coffee and infusions will always be available.
