Implementation of bird and wildlife watching site, Morro de Calzada Amazon Center

Another achievement of 2024 has been the improvement of services and observatories at the Morro de Calzada Amazon Center, a specialized space for bird and wildlife watching that we manage directly and seek to position as a must-visit site for birdwatchers, bird and wildlife photographers and nature lovers.

By 2025 the site can be visited for half a day, full day with specialized guided birding or photography services and food services, if required. Currently, there are at least 5 active observatories, which are detailed below:

    • Hummingbird observatory: Up to 11 species have been recorded, including the Rufous-crested Coquette.
    • Observatory of Crakes and Rails: Where up to 5 species have been recorded, including the Blackish Rail, Russet-crowned Crake and Rufous-sided Crake.
    • Tanager observatory: Where up to 13 species have been recorded, including the Burnished-buff Tanager and the Black-bellied Tanager.
    • Monkey observatory: Where 2 species have been recorded, Andean-saddle-back Tamarin and San Martin Titi Monkey.
    • Arenal Trail: Where we have recorded approximatly 55 species, including Mishana Tyrannulet, Zimmer’s Antbird, and Painted Manakin, among others.

Conservation and ecotourism projects

This year we were also able to continue working on conservation projects, linked to wildlife monitoring and research and participating in the implementation of mechanisms to conserve Amazonian ecosystems; among the most important projects we have:

    • Design and implementation of automated wildlife monitoring: We have initiated a project with counterpart funds from the Proinnovate program for the design and implementation of a digital platform to automate the work of field monitoring of birds and wildlife.
    • Reforestation with forest species attractive to birds: We have started in the Morro de Calzada Amazon Center a work of forest recovery with fruit species and flowers attractive to birds, in areas previously degraded by agriculture.
    • We also continue with the program “Birding for Conservation”, raising awareness in the community about the importance of conserving nature by learning how to observe birds.
    • Finally, we are in continuous collaboration with different companies and organizations that are compatible with our values, such as the Chief of the Alto Mayo Protected Forest of SERNANP with whom we have signed a conservation agreement to facilitate activities in favor of the conservation of the protected natural area.

For all mentioned above, our team is very grateful to all our travelers, companies and partner organizations for all that has been achieved in 2024 and for a 2025 with more bird and wildlife watching and photography adventures, services and projects compatible with nature conservation, especially forests.
