In April 2025, we led a trip to birding in Peru with good friends who are birdwatchers and photographers, between the Andes near the city of Lima and northeastern Peru (in the regions of San Martín and Amazonas), where we managed to record almost 600 species in fifteen days. In the second part of this birdwatching trip in Peru in San Martín, we went in search of the famous Scarlet-banded Barbet.
Birding in Peru – Scarlet-banded Barbet Expedition
Richard and Simon joined us for this part of the trip, bringing our total to six people, including the driver and guide. This adventure began in Tarapoto, from where we headed out in search of some endemic and representative species of northern Peru. On the way to the town of Flor de Café – Plataforma, we began our bird watching activities. We finally arrived at our destination and, after lunch, set off in search of the enigma of the trip, the Scarlet-banded Barbet.
Our trip was also marked by heavy rains, which accompanied us practically every day and somewhat reduced our birdwatching success. Above all, it made accessibility more difficult due to the presence of muddy roads—lots of mud.
During the three days of the expedition, we managed to record a total of 177 species, 81 of which were photographed. Below, we share some of the images we obtained.
