We recently led a coastal birding expedition with Andy and Laura, two friends from the U.S., in areas near Lima, and we were able to observe more than 70 bird species typical of the Peruvian coast.
Peru coastal birding expedition
The expedition started very early; we left from the city of Lima and made our first stop at the coastal wetlands after enjoying a traditional breakfast. At this first stop, we recorded 50 species, including the Comb Duck, Wren-like Rushbird, South American Tern, Least Seedsnipe, Marbled Godwit, among the most notable.
Following the route, we arrived in Pucusana, where we took a small boat and sailed close to the coast, circling a small island where we were able to observe Red-legged Cormorants, Inca Terns, Peruvian Pelicans, Humboldt Penguins, Peruvian Boobies, Blue-footed Boobies, and Surf Cinclodez (E*), among other species of interest.
After a seafood lunch, we continued our journey to the east in search of species associated with the peruvian desert and coastal hills. At this last stop, highlights included sightings of Coastal Miner (E*), Peruvian Thick-knee, Burrowing Owl, and the Thick-billed Miner (E*), among other species of great interest.

The coastal birding expedition in Lima is a must-do if you’re coming to Peru for birdwatching; it may take an extra day, but you’ll be rewarded with bird species found only along the coast influenced by the Humboldt Current.
