Painted Manakin (Machaeropterus eckelberryi), a lately discovered species and endemic to Peru, was recorded due the bird monitoring developed in the Conservation and Recovery Zone – ZoCRE Morro de Calzada, during the period from September 2019 to September 2024.

Painted Manakin

It is a species belonging to Pipridae´s family, which was discovered in 2017 with a restricted distribution to Loreto and San Martin regions.

In the case of San Martin, it has been reported in the Cordillera Azul National Park, the ZoCRE Morro de Calzada and the Mishquiyacu quebrada (Lane, Kratter, O’neill, 2017).

The results of Painted Manakin monitoring were the following:

  • Monitoring visits were done from 7 to 11 am.

  • As a result, two sites were marked, a site near Ikam Expeditions Reserve and a site in the south-east of Morro de Calzada.

  • Also near to the interpretation center, were songs principally recorded, one individual was observed but the observation success was low (20%).

  • In the southeast of Morro, we observed the greatest number of individuals at one time (3 males and 1 female) and obtained a higher recording success rate (90%), although we were able to observe the species 60% of the time.

  • The record of the species in this area is due to the presence of fruits that it consumes, the low human presence and low human disturbance in the area.

Species monitoring is carried out continuously by our team, both during tours and in their absence. In turn, this ongoing effort serves as the foundation for creating activities that bridge high-quality ecotourism with vital conservation goals.
