Painted Manakin (Machaeropterus eckelberryi) in Morro de Calzada, Peru

painted manakin

Painted Manakin (Machaeropterus eckelberryi), a lately discovered species and endemic to Peru, was recorded due the bird monitoring developed in the Conservation and Recovery Zone – ZoCRE Morro de Calzada, during the period from September 2019 to February 2020.

Painted Manakin

It is a species belonging to Pipridae´s family, which was discovered in 2017, with a restricted distribution to Loreto and San Martín regions.

In the case of San Martin, it has been reported in the Cordillera Azul National Park, the ZoCRE Morro de Calzada and the Mishquiyacu quebrada (Lane, Kratter, O’neill, 2017).

The results of Painted Manakin monitoring were the following:

  • Ten monitoring visits were done from 7 to 11 am.

  • As a result, two sites were marked, a site near to the interpretation center and a site in the south-east of Morro de Calzada.

  • So, in the site near to the interpretation center, songs were principally recorded, one individual was observed, and the observation success was low (40%).

  • Meanwhile, in the south-east of Morro de Calzada, the highest number of individuals were observed in one moment (3 males and 1 female) and the best observation success was achieved (80%).  So, this could be explained by the lower traffic of people and less use of playback too.

Despite the impact of the pandemia on the continuity of our activities, they have recovered and hope to achieve more specific results on this species soon.

Certainly, the constant and professional monitoring of wild species is the key to the design of experiences and activities related to conservation.
